K2 Marine picks Yanmar power.

Why the Auckland-based boatbuilder relies on Yanmar engines to propel their premium Wright 52 Catamarans.

West Auckland-based K2 Marine has built a reputation as one of New Zealand’s finest custom boat builders – known for impeccable build quality, cutting edge design, and luxurious, modern finishes.

Behind K2 Marine are Kelvin and Amos Kay, a father and son team with a deep-rooted passion for boating. Together they’ve created K2 Marine’s most popular model, the Wright 52 Power Catamaran available in both sedan and flybridge layouts.

And this is where Yanmar power comes into play. After weighing up various marine propulsion units, the K2 Marine team made the decision to go with Yanmar for a variety of reasons.

“When we started building and selling the Wright 52, we wanted an engine that came with a good reputation. We saw Yanmar as a well-established industry leader, plus we received a positive response from customers who trusted the brand as well,” said Amos Kay.

From a technical standpoint, the Yanmar engines also stacked up.

“Both the 6-LY and 6-LF models are compact in size, which meant they can fit directly into the Wright 52 without any modifications,” Amos explained. “The engines also provide plenty of power, starting with the base model 6-LY 400HP model which has more than enough grunt for most people’s boating requirements.”

For owners seeking an extra boost, the Wright 52 can be spec’d with 440HP, 500HP, right up to 550HP powerplant. But the beauty is, Yanmar engines are also designed for efficiency.

“When I show customers the fuel consumption data, they’re always surprised at how low the running costs are,” said Amos. “Because Yanmars are super-efficient to run, it’s a key selling point for us.”

Building any boat takes a team effort, and K2 Marine found a valuable partner in Power Equipment, Yanmar’s New Zealand distributor.

“They provided vital technical support during the initial development stages and continue to do so now that Kelvin and I are in full production,” Amos noted. “Being able to tap into their expert product knowledge saved us plenty of time and a few headaches. They’ve been responsive partners every step of the way.”

Ultimately, the precision-crafted Wright 52 catamarans from K2 Marine represent the best of New Zealand boatbuilding, powered by reliable, high-performing, and efficient Yanmar engines. It’s a potent combination delivering a first-class on-water experience.
