Yanmar Powers Kokoru’s Incredible Comeback Story
Nobody said owning a boat is plain sailing – and few know that better than Matthew, the proud owner of Kokoru, a classic 12-metre launch based at Pine Harbour.
Under its previous owners, Kokoru underwent a complete top-to-bottom restoration, emerging as an immaculately presented launch full of character. Unfortunately, this return to glory was short-lived.
Only a month after the project was completed, disaster struck: a neighbouring boat in Pine Harbour Marina caught fire, drifting into the path of Kokoru and setting her alight.
“After everything that had gone into her, the fire undid it all. But I was determined to take on the challenge and bring Kokoru back – and do it right.” says Matthew.
Choosing Marine Diesel Solutions at Pine Harbour and working with Allister Spick – the man who had completed the first restoration – was an easy decision.
“We did our homework, and Allister knew the boat back to front. I felt really comfortable with him. He'd already done an incredible job once before.”
The rebuild included one major decision early on: selecting the right engines.
Kokoru Mark I had run twin 75HP Yanmar engines. Although they didn’t see much action, all the performance tests and sea trials proved they were efficient, quiet, and reliable.
For Matthew, it made sense to stick with proven Yanmar power for Kokoru Mark II – this time opting for twin 80HP common-rail Yanmars, offering a little extra power ideal for the coastal cruising he had planned.
“Getting the powerplant right is crucial with any vessel,” Matthew says. “The Yanmars ticked all the boxes for me – and working with Allister and Power Equipment made the process smooth. We were also lucky that Allister was able to pre-order the engines so they could go straight in. They fitted beautifully.”
Matching Matthew’s 'slightly OCD nature' with Allister’s attention to detail meant the result was something special. “We’ve created an engine bay that’s next-level neat and tidy. I’m absolutely rapt.”
Now fully finished, Kokoru looks better than ever – a beautifully restored classic ready for a whole new chapter of adventures, powered by trusted Yanmar performance.
